Ask why the crew wants a crane

A crane can help move cut sections out of a constrained space, but it is not automatically necessary. OSHA’s tree-care guidance flags falling objects, lifts, traffic and lines. Ask bidders to explain their proposed lift or rigging sequence, exclusion zone and a viable alternative if access changes.

Count the setup footprint

A truck, crane, outrigger, chipper and log trailer may need room beyond the yard. Macon-Bibb’s published excavation/occupation form has fields for a crane, lane or street closure, flagger and barricades. Ask the county Engineering/Public Works office whether the exact footprint needs authorization; an old blank form is not itself a current approval.

Check parcel and line constraints

For a property in Macon-Bibb’s design-review districts, ask Planning & Zoning about a Certificate of Appropriateness before removal. Have the crew identify overhead lines, buried services, driveways and neighboring structures, and describe who coordinates with the utility if clearance is uncertain.

Make the quote a finished job

Ask what is included for crew/equipment hours, traffic measures, logs, chips, stump, regrading, lawn/drive repair and additional trips. The current county yard-waste page does not confirm contractor-cut whole-tree eligibility in text, so do not let a large log pile become the owner’s unpriced problem.

A common crane question

Is a crane always the costlier way to remove a large Macon tree?

No fixed comparison is defensible without the site. A crane may add setup but save other labor or control a difficult lift; access, permits and disposal can shift either option. Get two safe, specified plans if the contractor can offer them, not a generic per-foot surcharge.

For the written scope

Price the whole site.

Have bidders mark equipment location, outrigger protection, fall zone, public-space use, utility plan, who gets any approval, haul-away and restoration in the written scope.
