Know what a homeowner can safely leave alone

Gathering small branches from an open yard is different from felling a tree, cutting overhead limbs or freeing a storm-hung branch. The ISA says large-tree removal and pruning are dangerous work for trained and equipped people. If the tree could strike a roof, driveway, fence or neighbor’s land, seek a professional site plan.

Do not work toward an energized line

OSHA documents fatal tree-work electrocutions when a saw, branch or felled tree touches a power line. If a tree is near a line, keep clear and contact the utility; a hired crew also needs the right plan and qualifications rather than merely a chainsaw and ladder.

Check design review before any DIY cut

Macon-Bibb Planning & Zoning identifies HR1, HR2, HR3, HC, HPD, HPD-BH, CBD-1 and CBD-2 as design-review districts. Its owner guide says dead or dying tree removal in such a district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness and an arborist/tree-surgeon statement. Check the parcel and ask staff; a neighborhood name does not prove the zoning.

Price the finish, not just the saw work

A crew that leaves a log pile is not offering the same scope as full haul-away. Macon-Bibb’s current yard-debris page says Ryland pickup is every other week, but does not settle contractor-cut whole-tree piles in its text. Put branch/log haul, stump, access and site repair in the written bid rather than counting on curb service.

No assumption of that kind is safe. The applicable review is tied to the property and proposed work, not simply who holds the saw. Check Planning & Zoning for design-review property and other project approvals. When safety or a neighboring structure is at stake, use a trained, equipped crew.
